Mae West: Denny Gable

MAE WEST starred in "Sextette" [1978] and handsome, powerfully built Denny Gable was used as a shot putter.
• • Denny Gable [27 November 1950 — 22 July 2000] • •
• • Born in Iowa on 27 November 1950, a little tyke named Denny Gable matured into a modern gladiator who added grace and beauty to the Muscle Beach scene. Gable sculpted his physique at Gold's Gym and was once a training partner of Arnold Schwarznegger.
• • In 1975, Denny Gable, then in his early 20s, annexed the Mr. Western America title as well as achieving these positions in national competitions:  Mr America, IFBB, Tall, 3rd; Mr USA, IFBB, Most Muscular, 1st; Mr USA, IFBB, Most Muscular, 1st; and Mr Western America, IFBB, Overall Winner.
• • In 1975, Denny Gable appeared as himself onscreen in the documentary "Pumping Iron."  He posed for magazines and scored the front cover of Muscle Builder [September 1975 issue, Vol. 16, No. 5].  Wow!
• • Three years later, he had the privilege of working with Mae West in her last movie, "Sextette."
• • Denny Gable suffered a pulmonary embolism (heart attack) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Saturday, 22 July  2000. He was 49.
• • On Tuesday, 22 July 2008 • •
• • Staged in Manhattan at the Algonquin, as part of the Fresh Fruit Festival, the play "Courting Mae West: Sex, Censorship and Secrets" (based on true events) had its final performance on Tuesday, 22 July 2008.  Sultry Yvonne Sayers portrayed the Brooklyn bombshell at odds with City Hall, the censors, and her wayward sister Beverly.

• • Mae West said: "You can overcome any obstacle if you try hard enough. When I was appearing in vaudeville, for instance, they gave me skits that were dull and ordinary, regular routine stuff. I complained that I'd be a flop in no time with such acts. I demanded something really original. They laughed at me. So I went home and wrote one of my own. That's how I happened to start writing."

• • A newspaper in Australia wrote about Mae West.
• • "Mae West  Achieves Fame With Her Books" • •
• • Sunday Times explained: "She Done Him Wrong," the novel based on Miss West's picture, which skyrocketed her to film fame, already is one of the world's best-sellers, and nearly a million copies have been sold.  At present the star is at work on a new book, "How to Misbehave," and is contemplating novelising her original screen story, "I'm No Angel."  If she finds time, it is expected that she will write a novel based on her screen drama of the Naughty Nineties, "It Ain't  No Sin."  . . .

• • The Mae West Blog was started nine years ago in July 2004. You are reading the 2698th blog post. Unlike many blogs, which draw upon reprinted content from a newspaper or a magazine and/ or summaries, links, or photos, the mainstay of this blog is its fresh material focused on the life and career of Mae West, herself an American original.
