Mae West: LeRoy Stone

In September 1934, MAE WEST was involved in promoting her fourth feature for Paramount Pictures: "Belle of the Nineties." This motion picture was released on Friday, 21 September 1934.  For the film editing, we can thank LeRoy Stone.
• • LeRoy Stone [5 January 1894 — 15 September 1949] • •
• • Born in San Francisco, California on 5 January 1894 was LeRoy Stone.
• • By the time he was 22 years old, he was in Tinseltown and editing films during the silent screen era.  He did a lot of flickers and transitioned easily to talkies.
• • In 1934, he did the film editing on "Belle of the Nineties" starring Mae.
• • In 1935, he did the film editing on "Goin' to Town" once again starring Mae.
• • From 1916 — 1949 he worked steadily on five dozen projects for the silver screen.
• • LeRoy Stone died in Santa Monica, California on Thursday, 15 September 1949. He was 55.
• • On Tuesday, 18 September 1951 • •
• • "University Theatre Plans Film Opener" • •
• • On Tuesday, 18 September 1951, The Cornell Daily Sun announced that "My Little Chickadee," featuring Mae West and the late W. C. Fields, will open the University Theatre season with shows in Willard Straight at 7pm and 9:15pm on Friday and Saturday night.
• • On Thursday, 18 September 1980 • •
• • It was September when Mae West was in the hospital and not doing well.  On Thursday, 18 September 1980, the Hollywood icon suffered a second stroke, and this left her right side paralyzed.  Dreadful.

• • Staying faithful to the gritty themes in the novel, LindaAnn Loschiavo trimmed the work to 85 minutes for a cast of eight.
• • In Her Own Words • •
• • Mae West said: "Men, in fact, are generally regarded as my weakness. It is instinctive for a woman to want a man to protect her."
• • Quote, Unquote • •
• • NY1 News mentioned Mae West.
• • Budd Mishkin wrote:  In all, Alvin Colt says there are 3,000 sketches.  And almost as many stories about people with whom he's worked.
• • Budd Mishkin wrote: “One of the critics said that Orson [Wells] had everything in it but the kitchen sink, so at curtain call, he used to push out the kitchen sink,” Alvin Colt recalls.
• • Budd Mishkin wrote: And meeting Mae West for a show that eventually was scrapped. "I'm in this room all by myself, waiting, and my goodness, this is Mae West's bedroom, what am I doing in here?” says Colt.
• • Budd Mishkin wrote: But dish the dirt on camera about stars he's worked with? Never.  "No no no, that wouldn't be fair. That would be bad,” he says.  Colt is too much of a gentleman to do that, a product of a different era. ...

• • The Mae West Blog was started nine years ago in July 2004. You are reading the 2744th blog post. Unlike many blogs, which draw upon reprinted content from a newspaper or a magazine and/ or summaries, links, or photos, the mainstay of this blog is its fresh material focused on the life and career of Mae West, herself an American original.
