Mae West: Top Billing

In July 1970, The Australian Women's Weekly discussed MAE WEST and her eagerly awaited return to the silver screen.
• • Don Prince wrote: It was for a very large sum of money that Miss West decided to return to films after an absence of a quarter of a century, and play in Gore Vidal's transsexual story.
• • Don Prince continued: When producer Robert Fryer first approached her she was quite convinced that she was being invited to play the title role of Myra Breckinridge.
• • Don Prince added: The explanation that the generation gap meant she wouldn't be playing the role didn't weigh with Mae. When she learned that Myra was actually a sex-changed character who, before an operation, was a 'man named Myron Breckinridge,' she was no longer interested in it.
• • "I like my sexes stable," she remarked.  ...

• • During July 1931 Mae West entered into a complex discussion with the Shuberts about a stage version of "The Constant Sinner," based on her bi-racial novel set in Harlem and published by Macauley in hardcover [November 1930].
• • The mainstage contracts were signed by Mae West the playwright (on Friday, 10 July 1931) and Mae West the Broadway star (on 20 August 1931).
• • When she brought her stage play "The Constant Sinner" to Atlantic City in August 1931, the crowds lined up for tickets, noted The New York Times.

• • Ian Whitcomb was born in Woking, Surrey, England on Friday, 10 July 1941.
• • Ian Whitcomb was the producer for Mae West on her album "Great Balls of Fire" [MGM Records, 1972].  He's 73 today and we hope the celebration is simply smashing.

• • The Mae West Blog was started ten years ago in July 2004. You are reading the 2954th blog post. Unlike many blogs, which draw upon reprinted content from a newspaper or a magazine and/ or summaries, links, or photos, the mainstay of this blog is its fresh material focused on the life and career of Mae West, herself an American original.

  1. CONGRATULATIONS on reaching the 10 year anniversary of posting the Mae West Blog. Mae West herself once stated that the reason she chose the moniker "Jane Mast" back in 1926 was because people would see "written by Mae West, produced by Mae West, and directed by Mae West" and possibly think "too much Mae West." Here it is 2014, and her fans still can't get enough Mae West. Best wishes for continued success with all your projects!
