• • Born in  Switzerland, O.M. Steiger came into the world on Wednesday, 13 November 1878. He became an actor at age 57 and his first role was as a French butler in "Goin' to Town" [1935]. His Hollywood career was quiet short, perhaps due to language issues as well as his maturity. He was seen as a town resident in "Swiss Miss" [1938], and for the last time in "Johnny Angel" [1945], where he played a Frenchman.

• • It was Monday, 15 August 1921 and Mae West was enjoying her debut in "The Mimic World" playing controversial characters such as Shifty Liz.
• • With "The Mimic World of 1921," the Shuberts had hoped for a big hit. Additionally, this revue was inaugurating their new roof theatre, Century Promenade, that featured a restaurant and a promenade overlooking Central Park. However, the show opened to mixed reviews from a number of top critics.
• • Mae West wore a daring black velvet dress onstage, "cut at either side to display her bare hips," wrote Women's Wear [24 August 1921], quaking under such a sartorial shock. Clearly, this was Whoopee Wear.

The theme was: "Mae West in Bohemia — — Gin, Sin, Censorship, and Eugene O'Neill."   The event was announced in several major media outlets, including The New Yorker and The New York Times.  And on August 13th, it was billboarded on the front page of the NYPL's site, causing a happy stampede to 425 Sixth Avenue.  Yes, truly a-Mae-zing. If you attended, then you know how much fun we had.
