Mae West: Danton Walker

Danton Walker, Broadway columnist for the New York Daily News, often mentioned MAE WEST in his daily chronicles. Since he died in the month of August, here he is.
• • In 1954, Danton Walker wrote:  Mae West will return her eight muscle men to Las Vegas, at the end of her Latin Quarter run, in a double-deck trailer.  ...

• • Danton Walker's book, "I Believe in Ghosts: True Stories of Some Haunted Celebrities and Their Celebrated Haunts," recounted stories told to him by Mae West, Burl Ives, Beatrice Lillie, Ida Lupino, Guthrie McClintic, Mabel Mercer, Mary Wood, and Noel Coward, etc.  His book went through several editions.
• • Danton Walker, Broadway columnist for the New York Daily News, was neither the first nor the best example of that vaguely journalistic genus, the gossip-monger. In his 23 years of reporting flack-work, rumor, trivia and hearsay, his wit was generally perishable, his essays at political thinking were often bottom drawer (Cuban Dictator Fulgencio Batista was "the most dynamic and forceful personality I ever interviewed"), his prophecies of events were mercifully forgotten, his items were usually inconsequential, though short enough to be mildly habit forming, like peanuts.

• • An interview with Mae West quite naturally led to talk of sex, since she was the pioneer of more permissive entertainment.
