Mae West: Pueblo Chieftain

MAE WEST gets a shout-out in the Pueblo Chieftain! This popular paper is based here: 825 W. Sixth St., Pueblo, CO 81003. Sending the love right back at you!
• • "Monday Medley: Westward, ho" • •
• • The Pueblo Chieftain wrote: The Mae West Birthday Gala commences in August in New York and continues through August 17, the 123rd birth anniversary of the saucy entertainer. There will be several West-themed events, including songs, exhibitions, readings and walking tours. And in the spirit of the occasion, here are a few memorable words from Ms. Mae:
• • “Between two evils, I always pick the one I never tried before.”
• • “You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.”
• • “Personally, I like two types of men — domestic and foreign.”
• • “I generally avoid temptation unless I can’t resist it.”
• • “Those who are easily shocked should be shocked more often.

• • In an interview with George Daws, Mae West said: "Everyone else that gets in the money out here buys a forty-room house, hires a dozen servants, and gets ritzy. But not me. I'd be lonesome."

• • Audiences appreciated Mae West in "Catherine Was Great" but the reviewers are often hard to please.  Variety was persnicketty so often that their resident sourpusses were reliably poised to leave no turn unstoned. The headline for Variety's front page critique was "Mae West Stands 'em Up Despite Pans" (published in the issue dated for Wednesday, 9 August 1944).  According to the man-on-the-aisle, "the play lacks fun."

• • Mae West and Dorothea Wieck wouldn't copy Hollywood and pluck their eyebrows — and now Hollywood is copying them.
• • In Her Own Words • •
• • Mae West said:  "I've always taken the rap for the Code, but it was really those Barbara Stanwyck pictures (i.e., 'Babyface') that did it."
• • In character as Diamond Lil, Mae West said: "Diamonds are my career."
• • Quote, Unquote • •
• • An ad for "I'm No Angel" in August 1934 said this:
• • Castle Theatre, Newcastle, Wyoming — Last Time Tonight: Thursday, August 9th — Mae West in "I'm No Angel" — A vehicle for Mae West which fits every curve of her fascinating personality.  Her blinding swift wit is ever present.

• • Thank you for reading, sending questions, and posting comments during these past twelve years. The other day we entertained 3,497 visitors. And we reached a milestone recently when we completed 3,500 blog posts. Wow!
• • By the Numbers • •
• • The Mae West Blog was started twelve years ago in July 2004.
You are reading the 3504th blog post. Unlike many blogs, which draw upon reprinted content from a newspaper or a magazine and/ or summaries, links, or photos, the mainstay of this blog is its fresh material focused on the life and career of Mae West, herself an American original.
