Mae West: Show Woman

In September 1934, MAE WEST sat down for a series of "Me and My Past" talks with the United Press syndicated reporter Leicester Wagner.  We will post excerpts from Chapter #1 in several installments.  This is excerpt ccc.

• • Dumbest Kind of Figuring • •
• • Their resentment is the dumbest kind of figuring. For the success of one star any star in pictures, should be welcome news in Hollywood. And Hollywood can stand a little good news for a change. When I heard of a poor picture coming out, I take it to heart as much as though it were mine. Reason? Because if other stars are going to turn out ordinary pictures, or "duds" as the non-draw pictures are known, audiences are going to got discouraged.
• • You can't keep people coming back to theaters when they feel that they are not getting their money's worth.  They won't be there to see entertaining dramas when they are made. That's just business, just showmanship. Which Hollywood that is, the near-sighted part of it, evidently could use more of.

• • Here's what Time Magazine's issue dated for Monday, 26 October 1959 noted about CBS news correspondent Charles Collingwood, who came up to see Mae West.
• • Time wrote: CBS-TV brass sat down and privately took in a video-taped Person to Person interview with the aging Sex Goddess Mae West — — and promptly canceled the earthy program because parts of it "might be misconstrued." Had Author West (Goodness Had Nothing to Do with It) said or done anything naughty before the cameras? "Certain minds always misconstrue everything," said the past mistress of double-meaning ribaldry. "I have a very big public that understands what I say."

• • "Mae West and the Men Who Knew Her" [57 minutes] — — the VHS format was released on Thursday, 26 October 1995.

• • Mae West said:  "I'm too busy to fall in love."
• • Quote, Unquote • •

• • By the Numbers • •
• • The Mae West Blog was started twelve years ago in July 2004.
You are reading the 3560th blog post. Unlike many blogs, which draw upon reprinted content from a newspaper or a magazine and/ or summaries, links, or photos, the mainstay of this blog is its fresh material focused on the life and career of Mae West, herself an American original.
