Mae West: Off the Hook

In September 1934, MAE WEST sat down for a series of "Me and My Past" talks with the United Press syndicated reporter Leicester Wagner.  We will post excerpts from Chapter #3 in several installments.  This is Chapter 3, excerpt a-a.

• • This is the first excerpt from the 3rd article in a series entitled "Me and My Past," as told by Mae West to Leicester Wagner, United Press staff correspondent in Hollywood.
• • Hollywood couldn't figure me out  — — despite the well-known fact that I brought a figure right along with me.
• • When I rode down the boulevard that first time, the film colony knew I was there, but didn't know exactly why. They likely had heard things about this woman who had been brought out from Broadway to support a man. My, my — —  what things?
• • So I don't blame them for wondering a bit when I settled down immediately in an apartment only a mile from Paramount, took the telephone receiver off the hook and turned all my attention to making good.
• • Word buzzed around that Mae West didn't like parties. Why, of all things, she didn't drink and she didn't smoke! Impossible but true. And the reason? I figure smoking would make a woman of my type seem hard. Drinking would make me coarse. Besides, I don't like the taste of liquor.

• • The Mae West Blog celebrates its 12th anniversary • •
• • Thank you for reading, sending questions, and posting comments during these past eleven years. The other day we entertained 3,497 visitors. And we reached a milestone recently when we completed 3,500 blog posts. Wow!
• • By the Numbers • •
• • The Mae West Blog was started ten years ago in July 2004. You are reading the 3568th blog post. Unlike many blogs, which draw upon reprinted content from a newspaper or a magazine and/ or summaries, links, or photos, the mainstay of this blog is its fresh material focused on the life and career of Mae West, herself an American original.
