Mae West: Lustful Embraces

Thank you for spending part of Valentine's Day with the Queen of Sex herself — — MAE WEST!
• • A very long article about MAE WEST and her career in Tinseltown appeared five years ago.  It was written by Paul Phaneuf. Let's enjoy it together. This is Part 30.
• • Mae West: "I'm here to make talkies" or Censor Will vs. Diamond Lil • •
• • stricter direction • •
• • Paul Phaneuf wrote:   A few years earlier the Catholic Church had devised its own movie code, giving stricter direction and definition to its flock. Written by Daniel Lord and staunch Catholic publisher Martin Quigley (who put out the important industry trade paper The Motion Picture Herald), it was an 18-page document that, among other things, directed that: "Excessive and lustful kissing, lustful embraces, suggestive postures and gestures, are not to be shown . . . In general passion should also be so treated that these scenes do not stimulate the lower and baser element . . . Obscenity in word, gesture, reference, song, joke, or by suggestion (even when likely to be understood only by part of the audience) is forbidden."
• • When this document came to the attention of Will Hays he said, "My eyes nearly popped out. This was the very thing I had been looking for."
• • suggestive postures and gestures • • . . .
• • This was Part 30.  Part 31 will appear tomorrow.

• • The Mae West Blog celebrates its 12th anniversary • •
• • Thank you for reading, sending questions, and posting comments during these past eleven years. The other day we entertained 3,497 visitors. And we reached a milestone recently when we completed 3,500 blog posts. Wow!
• • By the Numbers • •
• • The Mae West Blog was started ten years ago in July 2004. You are reading the 3639th
blog post. Unlike many blogs, which draw upon reprinted content from a newspaper or a
magazine and/ or summaries, links, or photos, the mainstay of this blog is its fresh material
focused on the life and career of Mae West, herself an American original.
