Mae West: Objectionable

A very long article about MAE WEST and her career in Tinseltown appeared five years ago.  It was written by Paul Phaneuf. Let's enjoy it together. This is Part 32.
• • Mae West: "I'm here to make talkies" or Censor Will vs. Diamond Lil • •
• • Eleanor Roosevelt approves of censorship • •
• • "I'm so happy the film industry has appointed a censor within its own ranks." — — Eleanor Roosevelt in her first radio address.
• • Paul Phaneuf wrote:  The chief censor for the Hays office had been James Wingate who had replaced the aforementioned Mr. Joy. Wingate had found nothing objectionable about "She Done Him Wrong" other than "a general low tone." As for "I'm No Angel," he told Hays that he "enjoyed the picture as a piece of entertainment."
• • This toleration was about to end. In 1934 Hays put Joseph Breen, a strict Catholic, in charge of enforcing the code. Breen was a former reporter, State Dept. official, and organizer of a large and successful Eucharistic Congress for Catholics in Chicago which brought him to Hays' attention.

• • This was Part 32.  Part 33 will appear tomorrow.

• • On Wednesday, 16 February 1927 in The N.Y. Times • •
• • One of the NYC vice squad detectives giving evidence against Mae West, Inspector A. Bolan informed the magistrate he was in possession of wondrously detailed notes that he jotted down in shorthand in the dark while watching "Sex" at Daly's 63rd Street Theatre. But when he had to read from his "cheat sheet" in front of ladies and the D.A., the man in blue balked.
• • Broadcast on Thursday, 16 February 1950 • •
• • From "Mae West On The Air" [Sandy Hook LP and CD SH 2098]
• • "Little Red Riding Hood" performed by Mae West (from "The Chesterfield Supper Club" program aired on Thursday, 16 February 1950).
• • Overheard in Hollywood • •
• • Mae West collapsed on the stage at Rochester last night, but the show went on. She was unable to continue with the third act of the play, 'Diamond Lil.' It was presented without her.
• • In Her Own Words • •
• • Mae West said:  "When a person thinks only of himself, he saves himself a lot of trouble."
• • Quote, Unquote • •
• • Raquel Welch discussed the red carpet chaos during the VIP premiere of "Myra" and Mae West.
• • They said, “Well, Mae West’s car is right behind yours, and she did not want you to be on the red carpet at the same time she was.”  ...

• • The Mae West Blog celebrates its 12th anniversary • •
• • Thank you for reading, sending questions, and posting comments during these past eleven years. The other day we entertained 3,497 visitors. And we reached a milestone recently when we completed 3,500 blog posts. Wow!
• • By the Numbers • •
• • The Mae West Blog was started ten years ago in July 2004. You are reading the 3641st
blog post. Unlike many blogs, which draw upon reprinted content from a newspaper or a
magazine and/ or summaries, links, or photos, the mainstay of this blog is its fresh material
focused on the life and career of Mae West, herself an American original.
