Mae West: Sex Changed

In July 1970, The Australian Women's Weekly discussed MAE WEST and her eagerly awaited return to the silver screen in a lengthy, unhurried article.  This is Part 6.
• • She's NOT Myra Breckinridge, but Mae Gets the Top Billing • •
• • Producer Robert Fryer • •
• • Don Prince wrote:  When producer Robert Fryer first approached her, she was quite convinced that she was being invited to play the title role of Myra Breckinridge.
• • A sex-changed character • •
• • The explanation that the generation gap meant she wouldn't be playing the role didn't weigh with Mae.  However, when she learned that Myra was actually a sex-changed character who, before an operation, was a man named Myron Breckinridge, she was no longer interested in it.
• • "I like my sexes stable," she remarked.
• • Actually, sexpot Raquel Welch plays Myra in this Gore Vidal—Robert Fryer production for 20th Century-Fox, while her alter ego or male counterpart is portrayed by Rex Reed.
• • Leticia Van Allen, an entertainer • •  . . .
• • This was Part 6. This article continues tomorrow with Part 7.

• • On Saturday, 20 July 1935 • •
• • On 20 July 1935, The Evening Capital let its readers know about an unusual evening when they printed this headline: "Mae West Dines With Gov. Nice."  Harry W. Nice [1877 — 1941] was Governor of Maryland for four years, from 1935 to 1939.
• • Overheard in Hollywood • •
• • St. Petersburg gets the new Mae West picture "I'm No Angel" at the same time as the big cities of the northern states.
• • In Her Own Words • •
• • Mae West said:  "I'm fortunate in having a lot of young fans, who, I suppose, have been watching my old films on TV and listening to my rock 'n' roll records such as "Way Out West" and "Wild Christmas," who have been pleading with me to do a picture."
• • Quote, Unquote • •
• • An article in a London newspaper mentioned Mae West.
• • John Lyttle wrote:  Hugh Hudson never trashed his actors the way Michael Sarne did.
• • Michael Sarne's line on Raquel Welch is legendary, a thing for movie buffs to quote: 'She is useful only as a joke.' Critic Rex Reed, cast as the pre-sex change Myra, was merely 'dreadful.' True, Mae West was praised, but John Huston was dismissed as an 'old hack'.  . . .

• • The Mae West Blog celebrates its 13th anniversary • •
• • Thank you for reading, sending questions, and posting comments during these past eleven years. Not long ago, we entertained 3,497 visitors. And we reached a milestone recently when we completed 3,700 blog posts. Wow!
• • By the Numbers • •
• • The Mae West Blog was started thirteen years ago in July 2004. You are reading the
3748th
blog post. Unlike many blogs, which draw upon reprinted content from a newspaper or a
magazine and/ or summaries, links, or photos, the mainstay of this blog is its fresh material
focused on the life and career of Mae West, herself an American original.
