Mae West: Raised Eyebrows

On Saturday, 18 October 1947, MAE WEST was interviewed by a London reporter.
• • "Mae West's visit gives lift to London's spirits" • •
• • "Wisecracks, diamonds — and those eyelashes enthrall her many admirers written by Bill Strutton of our London staff" • •
• • This is Part 6 of 9 segments.
• • Critics called it: "History with a Leer" • •
• • Bill Strutton wrote:   Mae tried to [take on a dramatic role] once by playing Catherine the Great of Russia, but she complained: "It's no good trying to be serious."
• • "When I held out my hand to be kissed the audience weren't happy — — until I raised my eyebrows in the way they liked." Mae sighed. "So the whole thing became a burlesque."
• • After that, a critic called her performance "history with a leer."
• • But, though the public insisted on keeping Mae a prisoner of her own character, she does not get tired of all their jokes about her figure and her "man" talk.
• • "No. If people expect me to be the same off-stage — — why, I call that flattery," she said.
• • "The biggest compliment ever paid me was to call pilot life-jackets 'Mae Wests.' And it gave me a kick to think airmen of all the Allies were talking of their 'Mae Wests.' "

• • On Monday, 25 September 2000 • •
• • This headline appeared in many places on Monday, 25 September 2000, thanks to UPI and AP: "Mae West memorabilia, jewelry, goes on the block." The sale would be held at Butterfields Auction House in Los Angeles. The memorabilia portion of Mae's belongings went before bidders on 24 October 2000.
• • Overheard in Hollywood • •
• • Mae West was seen enjoyed eating the eggplant parmigiana at Casa D'Oro in Westwood.
• • In Her Own Words • •
• • Mae West said:   "Don't try to make me respectable.  My public expects me to be bad."
• • Quote, Unquote • •
• • A Brisbane daily mentioned Mae West.
• • From Down Under, crime author and TV host Tara Moss writes:  Mae West quipped, ''Is that a gun in your pocket or are you happy to see me?'' The fact is, we are happy to see the femme fatale. Men are drawn to her because she is not only beautiful but also sexually voracious and available. The heartache afterwards is an afterthought. ...

• • The Mae West Blog celebrates its 13th anniversary • •
• • Thank you for reading, sending questions, and posting comments during these past eleven years. Not long ago, we entertained 3,497 visitors. And we reached a milestone recently when we completed 3,700 blog posts. Wow!
• • By the Numbers • •
• • The Mae West Blog was started thirteen years ago in July 2004. You are reading the 3794th blog post. Unlike many blogs, which draw upon reprinted content from a newspaper or a magazine and/ or summaries, links, or photos, the mainstay of this blog is its fresh material focused on the life and career of Mae West, herself an American original.
